Preparation for Summer English camp

Yesterday I travelled with a few others to a camp next to the River Tara in the eponymous canyon. The plan was to check out Camp Green as a possible site for the annual English language student camp, which we have previously held at Vucje, as well as for another camp for teenagers. We were very much welcomed by the hosts and spent rather longer than expected talking, eating and looking round the area. It is certainly very beautiful being in the mountains, in a canyon by rushing blue water. The accommodation is made up of comfortable log cabin-style chalets and seems an excellent place to go. It has also whetted my appetite to explore the north-west corner of Montenegro.

Spring in Niksic

The last vestiges of snow are disappearing and it is like the best British summer weather one could hope for. In the village / suburb where I live everyone has started tilling the land, either manually or with tractors, next-door has bought a pig and the smell of the countryside fills the air, as people dig lots of manure into their vegetable plots and orchards. Wondering when that proper spring rain will start, we could do with a big downpour to wash away all remains of winter, especially the road grit and the last patches of snow remaining in the shadows. I have hayfever which is unusual for me, but I'd rather get it out of the way now rather than the height of summer.

No, it's not a date in a cultic calendar - this is the season in Niksic and many other places in this part of the world where the pigs that have been raised since the spring in makeshift sties in back gardens finally get taken to market, or more usually slaughtered in said back garden. The weather has been very sunny and pleasant so far this autumn, but the temperatures are beginning to plunge. Many people time their weddings to coincide with this optimal period of the year so that the cost of feeding guests is relatively low. There is a period now until the advent fast begins when people can eat as much pork as they please, and prepare hams for smoking and drying, one of the great local traditions, ranking alongside brandy distillation.

Manjak piva u gradu piva

I moved in to my new place over a month ago, but I have been rather beset by 'teething' problems, and my internet connection has only just yesterday been semi-sorted out. Many things are relative here, so I try to avoid using unnecessary superlatives.
But it's a nice place, fully furnished, a large main room with living room and kitchen, a wood-burning stove (to be more authentically Montenegrin), a largish bedroom with spacious wardrobes and two beds, and a functional small bathroom. One of the great benefits which many houses in Niksic are missing is good heat insulation, which is really keeping my energy footprint down, and I am doing all of my cooking as well as heating on the wood stove.
The suburb of Niksic (Strasevina) is a 30-minute walk from the centre of Niksic, and as my car is currently not working, I am getting fitter walking everywhere.
I also started a new job soon after I moved, teaching at a newish private language school, giving English conversation lessons in the evenings. It's not enough on its own to pay the rent, but as it's only two evenings a week, it is one of several jobs I am engaged with. I have also started one-on-one English lessons, and my brother is keeping me supplied with web design work while my proofreading work is relatively quiet.

Christmas time in the UK

It seems that people are getting less sentimental about Christmas in the UK, which for me is a positive thing, but at the same time, people are getting more stressed, more materialistic and the "Season of goodwill" seems to last a maximum of a day. But I have enjoyed being on the UK for a week b4 Christmas, if for no other reason than to have a rest. I missed Christmas last year, by virtue of needing to work in a country where Christmas is celebrated, if at all, on Jan 7th. I did have some students round on Boxing Day for roast chicken and Christmas pud. This Christmas, because of family members being away and because of it falling on the weekend, Christmas will last 3 days, and will not the usual 1day of absolute gluttony, but several days of moderate gluttony.
